Metro Railway Transit trips from North Avenue station in Quezon City to Shaw Boulevard station in Madaluyong City and vice versa were suspended around 6 a.m. Tuesday due to a damaged rail between the Santolan and Ortigas stations.
The MRT management decided to operate half-line, carrying passengers only from Shaw Boulevard station and Taft Avenue station, northbound and southbound.
Commuters who came early to avoid rush hours were forced to take buses along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue to avoid further hassle as a result of the suspended trips.
MRT officer-in-charge Renato San Jose said operations resumed after almost two hours.
Last Thursday, MRT trips were disrupted also because of damaged rails on the southbound lane of Boni Avenue station.
Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya of the Department of Transportation and Communication, the agency who supervises railways operation, admitted that about one to three kilometers of MRT-3 rail need to be replaced.
He said the replacement was part of the contract between MRT Corp. and contractor Sumitomo before the contract was terminated in 2012.
Among the glitches involving the MRT-3 includes the injuries to at least 40 people in Pasay City two months ago; the short-circuit that caused fire in one coach at the Kamuning Station in November 2012; a shutdown of operations in October 2013; and faulty braking at the Ayala station last March that left at least 10 riders hurt.
MRTC chairman Robert Sobrepeña earlier blamed the DoTC for its failure to act on their previous proposals to have additional trains and upgraded system.
MRT-3 started its operation in 1999 as the country’s second rapid transit line in Metro Manila.
It forms part of the transport infrastructure, including the Manila Light Rail Transit System composed of are the LRT-1 and MRT-2, and the Metro Commuter Line of the Philippine National Railways.
