TWO days before President Benigno S. Aquino III is expected to explain the country’s emerging power crisis, the government said the operation of six powers later this year will stabilize the power situation in the Luzon grid.
The opening of three generation plants and completion of three plant expansions will generate an additional 423 megawatts of power to meet the Luzon grid’s demand of 300 MW, according to a report of the state-run Philippines News Agency,
PNA did not cite the source of the report, but identified the plants as Bacavalley Energy Inc’s Biomass Power Plant, Maibarara Geothermal Inc in Batangas, Pangea Green Energy Philippines Inc’s Payatas Biogas Plant, the GN Power Mariveles Coal Power Plant Unit 1, Trans-Asia CIP II Power Corporation and Green Future Innovation Inc’s Bioethanol and Cogeneration Plant in Isabela.
The six plants have a total capacity of 718.1 MWs, above the required reserve of 647 MWs for the Luzon grid, the report added.
Moreover, 296 MWs worth of committed power projects are coming in the Visayas grid on the second half of 2014.
In the Visayas region, the San Carlos Solar Energy Farm (SACASOL) and the Desco Natural Gas Power Plant were opened in February 2012, with a total power supply of 23 Megawatts.
Also, the Mindanao grid has added a capacity of 153.5 MW, since President Benigno Aquino’s assumption of the executive office, from four new power plants.
The Mindanao grid will also have an additional 26.1 MW from two bunker power plants to be operational in September 2014.
On the other hand, the Department of Energy-Renewable Energy Management Bureau (REMB) has also been involved in the subsidy of solar-panel installation on schools specifically in Manuel L. Quezon University and La Consolacion.
The REMB is also targeting another 24 schools or institutions to avail of the solar panel program.
Polytechnic University of the Philippines Sta. Mesa will also acquire solar panels, through the assistance of the Philippine National Oil Corporation-Renewable Energy Corporation.
Further, providing electrical assistance to the country, through the Sitio Electrification Program, is the National Electrification Administration, which is under the DOE.
Implementation of SEP is based on the DOE’s Household Electrification Plan (HEP), which aims to electrify 90 percent of the country’s household by 2017.
Data from the National Electrification Administration showed that SEP was fast-tracked after the President approved subsidies worth P14.28 million.
Last June, the NEA reported the completion of the 50 percent targeted sitios, stating also the target to bring electricity to the remaining 32,441 sitios by the end of the Aquino administration.
“Energization of the remaining sitios was spread over 2014 up to the first semester of 2016,” the NEA said.
Moreover, in July, the DOE-Visayas Field Office has also reported the on-going installation operations of Solar Home Systems in 375 households in Eastern Samar.
Under this program, three units of 3-watts LED lights, one unit of 1-watt LED light with a built-in AM/FM radio and cell phone charger will be installed in the beneficiary-household.
Another 535 families in Visayas are targeted to have their Solar Home Systems before 2015.
Relatively, the electrification of the Philippines will be hastened with the recent appointment of Undersecretary for Local Government Units and External Affairs Donato Marcos.
Tasked as a mediator between the LGUs and the energy companies, Marcos will play a huge part in persuading the fast-tracking of permission from the LGUs.
