An unfortunate sideshow

The barbs thrown at the organizers of the 30th Southeast Asian Games are part of an unfortunate sideshow of the international competition that the Philippines hosted this year.

Nothing, of course, could excuse the confusion that the foreign athletes experienced. All these and more were faithfully reported, much to the chagrin of the organizers and their supporters. Even the Palace said such criticism should be welcomed.

Meanwhile, honest criticism about the quality of the opening ceremony drew vicious attacks unworthy of a society that should be more tolerant of different opinions and points of view.

All this distracts us from the impressive showing that our athletes have presented so far. By the third day of the Games, the Philippines moved comfortably ahead in the overall medal race with 47 golds, 25 silvers and 16 bronzes.

Imagine how much better we can do in other competitions if we are able to give our athletes greater support—material or otherwise.

This is something we can all be proud about—without the help of the usual bromides from vapid TV commentators about how Filipinos can achieve greatness if they only put their minds to it.

No doubt, this year’s SEA Games is one for the books, withstanding many things, including lessons in humility, a typhoon, and a vibrant—though not always positive—discourse on social media.

Let’s hope all the noise does not distract us from the Games’ original intention, which is to celebrate the spirit of friendly competition among ASEAN neighbors, and the hard work, discipline and perseverance of athletes.
