Globe Telecom vows to build more cell sites

Globe Telecom Inc. said it will continue building cell sites next year amid slow progress in the government’s common tower program.

“From a planning perspective, we will do it as if we are building everything ourselves and we will continue to do so,” Globe chief technology officer Gil Genio said

“The reason why we are keeping the same model [beacuse] there’s no real tower that has been set up for multi-tenant use. At the moment, it has not happened yet and certainly for 2020, we are not pinning our hopes,” Genio added.

Globe recently signed memorandum of understanding with Aboitiz InfraCapital and Frontier Tower Associates Philippines to build common telecom towers in the cities of Cebu, Davao and Olongapo.

The Ayala-led telco also signed an MOU with ISOC Infrastructure Inc. and Malaysia-based tower giant edotco Group Sdn. Bhd. to support the common tower initiative of the Department of Information and Communications Technology.

The DICT plans to build at least 50,000 new common towers across the country in the next seven to 10 years.
