Ateneo students win in ASEAN Data Science Explorers 2019

An Ateneo De Manila University-based team has exceeded all three judges’ expectations to win the third ASEAN Data Science Explorers National Finals 2019 at the Technological Institute of the Philippines in Quezon City last Wednesday.

ADMU’s Sustainable team comprising of team members’ Krystel Iris de Castro and Anne Nicole Dolfo, edged nine other universities to win $800 cash prize and will represent the Philippines in the ASEANDSE Regional Finals to be held in Thailand, on Oct. 9. 

Sustainable’s project aims to resolve job automation and displacement by analyzing the impacts of technological disruption.

Their data includes ratio of human to machine work hours from 2018 to 2022, percentage of displaced jobs per country, and net effect of displacement and income by industry sector. 

Eecond place went to team Isdabest from De La Salle University-Manila, winning $400 with the duo of Patricia Nicole Joyce Cruz and Dominique Hannah Sy aiming to resolve the gender gap in the workplace.

TIP’s team Celestial-EX landed third place, taking home $200. It comprised of teammates Daniel Soriano and Joshua Bacani aiming to address carbon emission. 

The ASEANDSE aims to cultivate awareness and equip the youth the necessary IT and data analytics skills. 

“This program is to promote ASEAN awareness,” Senior Project Officer for ASEAN Foundation-SAP Joint Initiatives, Ilan Asqolani said. “Secondly, this program is to equip the youth with IT skills and data analytics skills.”

The contestants were judged based on the quality of data, data analysis, and recommendation. 

Last year, Team Dimicrocambio from Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology took second place in the ASEAN DSE Regional Finals with their project emphasizing to instill entrepreneurship education as a driving force to turn a student’s idea into action.
