Aviation-themed restaurant Blackbird at The Nielson Tower has made it to Monocle’s Top 50 Restaurant Awards—the only restaurant from the Philippines and one from seven in Asia.

Blackbird at The Nielson Tower in Makati has been named one of 2019’s Top 50 restaurants in the world by London-based publication Monocle.

The London-based publication identified its menu as “a celebration of travel.”

“Malaysian lamb rendang and Keralan fish curry honor the building’s former life as a gateway to the world,” the Monocle said in its short review of the no. 49 restaurant.

The Nielson Tower, in which the restaurant is located, is an Art Deco building previously used as the air control tower of the former Manila International Airport, the country’s first commercial airport.

Founder and executive chef Colin Mackay and head chef Kerwin Go have decided to keep the layout of the tower, transforming it to suit the dining establishment: the then-check in counter has been turned into a bar and lounge, the passenger terminal into a grill room, the tarmac as an al fresco dining area, and the control tower now serves as a private room called The Cabin.

It features an eclectic menu inspired by the aviation history of the building, with bestsellers lamb cutlets with potato gratin, Jack’s Creek Wagyu striploin, and the British-style fish pies, which Monocle said, “owes its place to Scottish chef-owner Colin Mackay,” who has been in the Philippines for 20 years.

The magazine also recommends its prawn scotch egg with coconut sambal on betel leaf.
