Davao City— The Penong’s 5150 Davao was a complete success achieving its main objective of making the sport of triathlon more accessible to the public at large.

Teenagers (from right) Karina Angelica Gelito, Pia Francesca Suarez and Micaela Rhey Jayme join the Penong’s Barbecue Seafood & Grill mascot at the finish line after ruling the Ladies Relay event during the Penong’s 5150 Davao.

The shorter 5150 distance, as well as the Sunrise Sprint held in conjunction with Penong’s 5150 Davao were easier options than the 70.3 IRONMAN for those who want to participate in the multi-sport event for the first time as well as graduates of IRONKIDS who want to continue in the sport.

Young athletes were able to compete on even terms with adults in the event resulting in surprising but welcome victories for the youngsters.

Teenagers Karina Angelica Gelito, 17; Pia Francesca Suarez, 17; and Micaela Rhey Jayme, 17, ruled the women’s relay in the Penong’s 5150 Davao while recent IRONKIDS graduates Gian Wallace Tumabang Taylor and Moira Martinez Erediano won the men’s and women’s categories of the Sunrise Sprint.

Gelito said they were grateful for the chance to compete in the shorter distance as a team.

“Our goal was for the three of us to run together in a race. We worked and trained really hard for this event,” said Gelito.

All three are high school students in Davao City. Gelito is a student of Davao Christian High School. Suarez studies at Ateneo De Davao. Jayme is a student of Stella Maris Academy of Davao.

Sunrise Events General Manager Princess Galura said the 5150 race and the Sunrise Sprint were introduced precisely to welcome everyone to the triathlon community in the country by introducing shorter distance races thus making it easier for more people to join.

“We are trying to grow the triathlon family. Many really want to participate in the 70.3 IRONMAN but they are not yet capable of going the distance. This is why we established the 5150 distance along with the Sunrise Sprint,” said Galura.

“As organizers we want them to be ready. We don’t want them to join when they are not yet ready. Because if they join the IRONMAN before they are ready, they can be a danger to others and themselves.”

Jakub Langhammer of the Czech Republic ruled the Men’s Pro Category. Dimity-Lee Duke won the Women’s Pro. John Leerams Chicano took home the title in the Asian Elite in the Penong’s 5150 Davao held over the weekend here.
