Singers Darren Espanto and Morissette Amon were not born yet when the Disney song “A Whole New World,” originally sang by Lea Salonga and Brad Kane, dominated the airwaves.

The original version, which can safely be counted as a pop classic, was a song from Disney’s 1992 animated feature film Aladdin. It garnered an Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 65th Academy Awards and won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year at the 36th Annual Grammys, the first and so far only Disney song to win in the category.

of ‘A Whole New World’ live at SM The Block on Thursday.

Since 1992, the song has been revived by popular artist almost a dozen times including the Philippine version by Jose Mari Chan and Lea Salonga in 1993, Nick Lachey and ex-wifeJessica Simpson in 2004, and Peter Andre and wife Katie Price in 2006.

To carry on the tradition of bringing the classic song to a new generation of music fans, Darren and Morissette were chosen by Disney to record their own version of the Aladdin theme song. The pair recently performed the song live at SM North EDSA and in the Wish 107.5 Bus at MOA By The Bay.

“ This is a classic. Everyone knows this song. I guess the challenge was to make your own rendition and at the same time, not to lose the magic of the song. We both watched the movie just to really internalize na parang kami mismo si Jasmine and Aladdin,” shared Morissette during an interview after their performance at SM The Block where “The Magic of Aladdin” exhibit.

“This is such a big thing for both of us and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity,” she continued adding that doing her own rendition of the song inspired her to do another Disney classic.

Meanwhile, Darren believes that being handpicked by Walt Disney to cover the song will serve as a chance to showcase Pinoy talents on the world stage once again.

“It’s such a big thing for both of us and it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. I’m very happy that we’re given all these amazing opportunities so that we can show our talent internationally, in other countries,” Darren said.

“The song can be streamed online, and they should watch out for the music video that we will be releasing soon,” he added.

Disney’s Aladdin premiered nationwide on Wednesday. Meanwhile, “The Magic of Aladdin” exhibit, which features the streets of Agrabah, the mystery-filled “Cave of Wonders,” the magic lamp, and the Sultan’s Palace, is on view and can be experienced until May 31 at SM The Block Atrium.
