Operators of online applications that may have violated the privacy of a digital consumer, especially on the lending fiasco in the internet, may face temporary or permanent ban.

The National Privacy Commission issued the warning after receiving over 400 complaints from borrowers, who faced public shaming on social media and other internet platforms.

“We have to take the side of the people. Clearly it was public shaming and cyberbullying and these are not allowed by law,” said NPC Commissioner Raymund Liboro.

By permanent ban, the commission meant that personal data would not and should not be used to harass clients who had been amiss in their payment obligation to lending institutions.

The commission is currently handling 485 complaints against operators of online lending applications that allegedly misused personal information of borrowers, such as disclosure of unpaid balances to other people.

Online lenders require clients to allow access into their contact information list, photos, files and documents saved in the borrower’s phone.
