After rousing Manila debut, Gonzales now shifts focus on future

After a scintillating performance in front of his countrymen, Ramon “The Bicolano” Gonzales wants to keep pushing and grinding.

In fact, he is already looking ahead to his next outing in ONE Championship.

Now riding on a three-bout win streak and coming off a first-round submission victory over Akihiro “Superjap” Fujisawa at ONE: ROOTS OF HONOR, his hunger to achieve more has only intensified.

“I’m very excited for my next fight,” he said.

“I hope that ONE Championship is noticing me and my team, and they see that I’m capable of giving excellent fights and I’m ready to take on high-level opponents.

“I’ll work even harder. Expect better performances in my next fights.”

Gonzales did not have a great start in the world of mixed martial arts, as he started with a 1-2 record before recalibrating.

The Filipino turned his career around in September 2017. He submitted “The Little Squirrel” Liu De Li Ge Ri Hu via second-round armbar, and followed that up with back-to-back first-round rear-naked choke victories.

Like any other athlete, “The Bicolano” wants to become a ONE World Champion and with the right mindset, he is confident he will achieve that goal.

“I’ve always dreamt of becoming a World Champion,” he stated.

“For that to happen, I have to believe in myself and my team, get all the support from all my loved ones, and mostly, be determined to succeed.

“I’ll work on all of the aspects of my game to get there. I’ll be training every day until my next fight.”

Now that he’s on the right path to realizing his dream, Gonzales is willing to take on anyone. Well, almost anyone.

He still feels strongly about facing his countrymen and while he hopes for a high-profile match in his next promotional appearance, he hopes it does not come at the expense of his compatriots.

“I’m willing to fight anyone,” he said. "We trust ONE Championship and sir Matt Hume (Senior Vice President of Operations and Competition) to decide on that, but I hope it does not come against a fellow Filipino.”
