Baguio City—A total of 277 young students have started working on Monday in the different offices of the city government under the Summer Program for the Employment of Students (SPES).

“The students are being deployed in the different offices like the city government offices plus the newly added working areas of the students in the offices of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, Department of Education and courts in Baguio,” said Janna Vivian Elitan, labor and employment assistant at the Public Employment Services Office.

She said the city government hired two batches of interns to accommodate the students, whose school calendar ends in May or June.

The first batch, composed of 277 students, started work on April 22 and will end on June 3 to complete the 30-day duration. The second batch will be composed of 133 students, who will receive a daily wage of P503.09.

Earlier, Maria Koniko de Leon, regional labor and employment officer of the Department of Labor and Employment-Cordillera Administrative Region, said the agency allotted P2.91 million for Baguio’s SPES program.

Sixty percent of the salary of the students will be paid by the city while the DOLE will shoulder the remaining 40 percent.

She said SPES is an employment bridging program during summer or Christmas vacation that aims to augment the family income of poor but deserving students who want to finish their education.
