Honoring the women

We join the rest of the world in celebrating Women’s Month in honoring and paying tribute to the females who have dedicated and continue to dedicate their lives to ensuring that women are granted equal rights as men.

This is one instance when we pause—as if we never did before in the silence of our heartbeats —in celebrating the marvelous, if astounding, success and achievements of strong women, not only in the Philippines but throughout the world.

We do not even need to go beyond our shoreline to raise respect and honor for our women. For they are seen and felt within the comforting four walls of the home, where they begin to enrich the souls of children and the family that each member may become a useful unit of society.

Honoring the women

These women at home may not be in government, may not have remunerative jobs in private firms, or even in multilateral organizations in support of promoting and endorsing humanitarian relief, advocating human rights principles and normative policies, advancing sustainable development and resolving some of the world’s most composite or confused conflicts.

In the Philippines, a highly patriarchal society, we have seen women being empowered and increasingly occupying meaningful spaces in various structures of society—in blocks of politics, the economy, and other fields of human endeavor where a person’s full blast is almost always needed.

We have seen how women in the Philippines have taken on essential roles to make society more comfortable for the different genders. And they have been successful in their efforts in raising the bar of equality, and in their discipline at nation-building.

We know that, even in the absence of such celebration, the Philippines at least has been striving to promote gender equality, as witness the notable achievements of women in the different coordinate branches of government, in the private sector and elsewhere where the men previously had the whip hand and prepotence.

Thus, this month, as in the other 11 months of the Gregorian calendar, we honor the Filipino women.
