44th International Bamboo Organ Festival presents Bach’s ‘Magnificat’

This year’s staging of the annual International Bamboo Organ Festival premiered on Feb. 21 with a gala concert for the sustaining member of the Bamboo Organ Foundation and major sponsors of the festival.

Organizers busy preparing for this year's International Bamboo Organ Festival. 

A repeat show is happening tonight at the 200-year-old St. Joseph Parish Church in Las Piñas City. 

On the program in tonight’s show is “Magnificat” by Johann Sebastian Bach and other works of the baroque period (Georg Philipp Telemann, Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Dieterich Buxtehude) performed by Johann Trummer (organ, Austria), Manu Mellaerts (trumpet, Belgium), soloists Stefanie Quintin, Sherla Najera, Michelle Mariposa, James Conde, Ervin Lumauag, Christopher Arceo, Mark Abesia, the Villancico Vocal Ensemble, and the Manila Baroque Ensemble. It is conducted by Beverly Shangkuan-Cheng.

The Las Piñas Bamboo Organ was declared National Cultural Treasure of the Philippines in 2003. 

Other events during the week-long festival are the open air concert with organist Mauro Goia (Italy) together with trumpeter Manu Mellaerts on Feb. 23 with OPM artists Klarisse de Guzman and Nyoy Volante; the organ recital by Viviane Loriaut (France) on Feb. 25; the Philippine-Korean Friendship Night with organists Dong-ill Shin and Yang-hee Yun, Hyo-young Kim (saenghwang), and Rachel Gerodias-Park (soprano) on Feb. 26; and the closing concert on Feb. 27 with the Las Piñas Boys Choir celebrating its 50th anniversary, to be held at the San Ezekiel Moreno Oratory (Villar Sipag Compound along C-5 Extension).

Tickets are priced at P600, P400, and P200 for Feb. 22, 24, 25, and 26. Tickets for Feb. 23 are at P600 and P400, and for Feb. 27 tickets are at P200.
