Coming soon: Movies for all and every one

We all know who reigned supremely at the box office. We are all aware who won the most awards. What was our biggest take home from the recently concluded MMFF?

I dare say, for as long as the main objective of the leaders of the Metro Manila Film Festival is to achieve their one billion financial target, let us no longer believe that the annual festival will showcase the best, brightest and world class samplings of Filipino cinema.

If we were to send Fantastica, the Princess, the Prince and the Perya, the movie which grossed more than P500 million, to the Oscars or Golden Globe for Foreign Film consideration, do you think the Philippines has a fighting chance of finally realizing the illusive dream of being part of that roster of foreign films who received so much love and praise from international critics and audiences?

Whatever was the plea and prayer of director Joel Lamangan of the multi-awarded Rainbow’s Sunset – equitable distribution of cinemas and a fighting chance for other movies, we all know is gone with the wind, gone in sixty seconds. The director’s plea can now be considered forgotten and this ghost of Christmas past will only resurface with a vengeance when in December of 2019, more cinema allocation are given to box-office champions which is a no brainer to predict, the Vice Ganda led movie and the Vic Sotto and Coco Martin starrers film.

Sakaling Maging Tayo
"Sakaling Maging Tayo" is one of the biggest box office bombs in local cinema this month

Thus, I cannot help but wonder, what happens now to the new Filipino movies that were shown after the December festival of films whose producers, without any doubt,  laughed their way to the banks?

Boy Tokwa Lodi ng Gapo, which Jose Manalo starred in was the first box office disaster of 2019. With Mary Poppins Returns and BumbleBee as its main big screen rivals, we don’t even have to predict its outcome. With this box-office result, is the public saying they only love Manalo when Wally Bayola and Paolo Ballesteros are with him?

How about Sakaling Maging Tayo, the make or break movie with the winsome McCoy de Leon and Elise Joson, did it make a box office cut and presence?

Are their fans sufficient enough to make the McLise headlined movie a surefire hit? Can we add the two to the elite circle of love teams? Will the adoring public of KathNiel, JaDine, and LizQuen welcome them or bash and hate them to bits as pretenders to the throne?

The career defining movie of Martin del Rosario, Perci Intalan’s Born Beautiful, do you think it has what it takes to duplicate if not surpass the successful of its predecessor Die Beautiful? As the transwoman Barbs torn between two lovers, portrayed by Kiko Matos and Akihiro Blanco, this trio con brio of talented actors, do they have what it takes to lure and seduce their pink public?

The believers, followers and supporter of director Brillante Mendoza, did they troop to the select cinemas and viewed the “as real as it gets” Alpha The Right To Kill?

The two comedy films that will have a cinema face off, the feel good yet  funny Ang Sikreto ng Piso with Ariel Rivera and Gelli de Belen, real life husband and wife as its protagonist s, and Tol, with the fresh comedic threesome of Joross Gamboa, Ketchup Eusebio and Arjo Atayde, will every one laugh out loud with these motion picture offerings?

All these January motion pictures have something beautiful to give to their respective target audiences.  Time, talent, money and love for their craft were poured out so that for these finished films with the hope that people will be more than curious to support and watch them.

With the right promotional blitz, strong word of mouth, and of course luck from the the Universe, majority of them will reap the golden fruits of their cinematic labor.
