Mayor Abigail Binay on Tuesday commended the Makati City Police force for strengthening its operations against illegal drugs in the city.

On Monday night, the authorities conducted a buy-bust operation in close coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency leading to the arrest of 12 suspected drug peddlers and the seizure of 23 sachets of shabu worth P200,000.

Makati police chief Rogelio Simon, in his report to Binay, said the drug sting happened around 7:30 p.m. along at Mascardo Street in Barangay Bangkal.

Police also recovered a plastic sachet of suspected cocaine, drug paraphernalia, a weighing scale, mobile phones and marked money used in the police operation.

The mayor reiterated that the city has a zero-tolerance policy on criminality, especially illegal drugs.

In August last year, four villages in the Makati were declared cleared and free of illegal drugs.

Declared drug-free were barangays Urdaneta and San Lorenzo, while Forbes Park and Magallanes were named drug-cleared barangays by the Regional Oversight Committee on Barangay Drug Clearing Program.

Binay urged the people of Makati to be vigilant and cooperate with her administration to help the government in its fight against the drug menace in the country.

“It is gratifying to know that our local police are keeping our communities under tight watch for illegal drugs. We urge citizens to be vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement authorities,” she said.

“We are serious about making Makati a drug-free city. I repeat, there will be no sacred cows under my administration, most especially if it concerns illegal drugs,” the mayor said.
