The duo of multi-titled jockey Jesse B. Guce and Super Sonic reigned supreme in the long 2,000-meter distance as they mastered their elite counterparts in the 2018 Philippine Racing Commission Chairman’s Cup on a windy Sunday afternoon at the Saddle and Clubs Leisure Park in Naic, Cavite.

Super Sonic delivers an emphatic win in the Philippine Racing Commission’s Chairman’s Cup at the Saddle and Clubs Leisure Park in Naic, Cavite.

With patience and familiarity on their side, JB Guce and Super Sonic played their cards right with a well-calculated start, before going full speed in the stretch, leaving the opposition crumbling behind to secure the five-length win in the P2-million stakes race.

“Noong nakapuwesto na ng maganda, kada po may nararamdaman ako na tatabi sa akin, para lang po hindi ako magipit, hiningan ko ang kabayo ko, kayang-kaya naman po. Pagdating po ng diretso, kinuha ko ang unahan, di-nrive ko lang po,” said Guce. “Kilala ko naman po ang kabayo ko, marunong namang sumunod. Ang worry ko lang sa kanya, walang tuneup, at ngayon lang tumakbo dito at baka manibago.”

The win was worth P1,200,000 million for owner Sandy Javier, who also garnered the P70,000 prize as breeder of the winning horse in the race held in honor of the late Philracom Chairman Benedicto Kalaw Katigbak, the “Millenium Transition Chairman,” who was head of the commission from 1998 to 2001.

The former Philracom Chairman’s son Isabelo Katigbak and his wife Uling awarded the prizes and trophies to Super Sonic’s winning connections.

Katigbak also received a Plaque of Appreciation from Philracom Chairman Andrew A. Sanchez honoring his father for his “outstanding leadership, vision and ability as Chairman of the Commission. He exemplified a spirit of professionalism and dedication to the development and growth of the horse-racing industry. The inspiring legacy he left behind shall serve for many generations to come.”

Box Office, ridden by Jockey Kevin Abobo and owned by SC Stockfarm, placed runner-up and received P400,000, while Critical Moment (jockey JA Guce, owner Melaine Habla) finished third and got P250,000. The Narciso Morales-owned fourth-placer Sheer, with jockey Val R. Dilema on his reins, pocketed P100,000.

Earlier, jockey JD Juco steered Pride of Laguna with an easy victory to claim the third leg of the 2018 Philracom 3YO Open Challenge Race.

Pride of Laguna needed to play it safe from the start, going behind Viva Morena before taking the lead midway through the race and ran away at the last 110 meters en route to a masterful win.

Pride of Laguna bagged P900,000 for owner Emmanuel Santos, with trophies for its stable, while Viva Morena was worth P337,500 for the second place finish.

Third-placer I Love Jane took home P187,500 and Born In April got P75,000 at fourth spot.

Meanwhile, the racing season concludes with the 3rd leg of the 3YO Open Challenge Series on Dec. 31, also at the Saddle and Clubs Leisure Park in Naic, Cavite.
