Asian Games gold medalists Yuka Saso and members of the national women’s golf team are donating all of their P13-million incentive to the National Golf Association of the Philippines.

That’s because under amateur rules, Saso and her teammates Bianca Kaye Pangdanan and Lois Kaye Go are forbidden from receiving cash incentives.

“Bawal po sa amin mag-receive ng pera. I-donate na lang po namin sa NGAP para masuportahan ang ibang mga bata,” said the 17-year-old Saso, after she and national team members, who won medals in the 2018 Asiad in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia, were honored by President Rodrigo Duterte in Malacanang on Wednesday.

Saso said this as she shared her thoughts after medallists in the recent Asiad received a total bonanza of of P24 million for their efforts.

Saso was guaranteed a P9-million windfall for winning the gold in the women’s individual play and as part of the three-member team that also claimed the team gold.

Her incentive includes the P2 million each that came from the PSC and the Philippine Olympic Committee, the P1 million from the Siklab Sports Foundation under Dennis Uy, P1 million from Philippine ambassador to Indonesia in Cesar Lee Hiong Tan Wee and an additional P1 million bonus from the PSC as instructed by President Duterte.

Skateboarder Margie Didal, who got P7 million each with fellow gold medalist weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, had fun during the awarding ceremony by asking President Duterte to make the “Dab” move with her, along with several other officials.

President Duterte obliged in doing the move, in which a person drops the head into the bent crook of a slanted arm, typically while raising the opposite arm in a parallel direction but out straight, with both arms pointed to the side and at an upward angle.

The president then playfully gave Didal a karate chop on the side of her head when he was done with the “Dab” move.

“Palabiro po si President Digong. Nag-request ako na kung puwede ipagawa sa kanya ito,” said Didal.

The Philippines won a total of four golds, two silvers and 15 bronze medals in the Asiad.

Boxer Rogen Ladon and judoka Kiyomi Watanabe bagged silvers for the Philippines.

President Duterte said the Philippines did not fall short in its efforts to have an excellent showing in the Asiad.

“We Filipinos have always been known for our competitive spirit, and this year, we did not fall short of sharing praise for our nation,” said Duterte.

Commissioners Ramon Fernandez, Charles Maxey, Celia Kiram, and Arnold Agustin, joined Chef de Mission Richard Gomez at the palace during the gathering, which also saw businessman-sportsman Dennis turn over cash incentives that was promised by the Siklab Foundation.

Ramirez said this is the biggest amount of incentives that the government has given to medal-winning athletes.”‹
