Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista has approved an ordinance creating a public transport service board that shall formulate a comprehensive and rationalized local public transport service plan.

He backed City Ordinance 2726 to address the transport problem in the city.

“The assistance of the Quezon City local government should be utilized to become a pro-active partner of the Department of Transportation, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board and private sectors in creating a long-term effective solution to traffic,” the measure read.

Bautista shall lead the public transport service board with heads of City Planning and Development Office Engineering Department and Department of Public Order and Safety as members.

The city council’s committee on transportation chairman is part of the board as well as representatives from DOTr, LTFRB, public transport sector, private sector and Liga ng mga Barangay president.

“It is timely that the Quezon City local government, through its different departments, to create/determine a comprehensive and rationalized public transport plan because they are knowledgeable in the formulation of policies,” the council said.

This applies “not only within their territory but also to its adjoining cities, monitor the volume of motor vehicles in main thoroughfares and gather information through public consultation for the benefit of the riding public,” the councilors added.

Meanwhile, job-seekers rushed to Quezon City Hall for the third 2018 Mega Job Fair organized by the QC Public Employment Service Office last Aug. 31, as 37 local and five international companies participated.

Among the over 3,000 job applicants who were interviewed, 416 were hired on the spot, while 2,047 applicants for local jobs and 200 applicants for overseas work are subject to interviews.

QC-PESO officer-in-charge Carlo Magno E. Abella said there are many job vacancies where applicants can apply and hiring will depend on the employers’ manpower needs.

According to Abella, job applicants must bring more copies of their resumes for them to have more chances of getting hired.

The Quezon City government conducts a Mega Job Fair every quarter of the year. QCPESO also organizes mini-job fairs every day at its office where employers welcome walk-in applicants.

In another development, legislators toured the city’s prime destinations as part of the celebration of Philippine Councilors’ Week last Thursday.

The tour started with a visit to the St. Pio Chapel in Barangay Bagumbayan where they learned about the chapel’s history and miracles of the St. Pio of Pietrelcina.

They also dropped by Barangay Holy Spirit’s Materials Recovery Facility and lauded the successful livelihood program where residents were able to raise funds by creating bags, office supplies, and arts and crafts out of reusable paper and plastic straws.

Barangay Holy Spirit was awarded the Barangay Seal of Good Housekeeping for achieving the best practices in the barangay level.

At the last stop, the councilors had a tour of National Kidney and Transplant Institute in East Avenue. NKTI is one of the hospitals showcased in the medical tourism where Bautista envisioned QC as a medical and wellness destination.

Councilor Abigail “Kate” Coseteng, chairperson of the City Council committee on tourism, said that for the past 20 years, the councilors visited the Quezon City Jail and the Solo Parents Association and gave donations to both institutions regularly.

This year, however, the committee decided to focus on the city’s top tourist spots as part of the promotion of arts and culture.
