Despite the commercial success of glutathione supplement—due, in part, to its skin whitening side effect—in the Philippines, many are still concerned about the safety of taking the supplement.

Glutathione has been rumored to induce gastrointestinal pain, skin allergies and other adverse health effects. But unknown to many, glutathione has been present in our system long before glutathione supplements became a commercial success in 2007. It is, in fact, a substance produced naturally by the liver.

IN FAIRNESS TO GLUTATHIONE. Experts set the records straight about the alleged adverse effects of taking glutathione, saying that the supplement—popular for its skin whitening side effect—is a substance produced naturally by the liver.

Leading food supplement manufacturer VIDA Nutriscience, Inc. and Japanese glutathione brand Kohjin Life Sciences team up to set the record straight and raise the standard of awareness on glutathione supplement.

“Our body naturally produces glutathione but it is depleted by various factors that are common to us such as stress, pollution, aging, alcohol and other vices, and even heavy exercise,” says Hitomi Ito of Kohjin’s Global Sales and Marketing Bio-Chemicals Division.

Apart from the skin lightening effect of glutathione, it is actually an agent in detoxifying liver and overall body from harmful toxins and heavy metals.

“The skin whitening is the side effect of the detoxification,” states Kohjin Global Sales and Marketing Bio-Chemicals Division Manager Yusuke Sauchi. “Glutathione is an antioxidant first before it is a whitening agent.”

Assistant Professor Wataru Aoi Kyoto  of Prefectural University in Japan adds the said substance also improves lipid metabolism and lessens fatigue.

Experts also agree that despite it being naturally produced by the body, glutathione—whether in soap, cream, or injectables or capsule format—does not pose serious threat to a person’s health.

“Our body recognizes glutathione so it’s not true that you can overdose on it. Our body knows what to do with it and if we supplement, we’re just aiding a natural process,” says Rodrigo Silvestre, president and managing director of Holchem Industrial Sales, Inc., exclusive importer and distributor of Kohjin glutathione in the Philippines.

Vida and Kohjin warned the public though to use products with certification from the government institution responsible for checking the effects and standards of products.

Kohjin is the only brand of glutathione that is recognized safe and effective by the United States Food and Drug Administration. Vida’s Snowcaps, on the other hand, is the first oral glutathione in the Philippines and is among the leading skin whitening supplements in the market today.

Snowcaps contains premium FDA-approved 500mg of L-Glutathione formulation, Alpha Lipoic Acid and Vitamin C for safe and effective whitening in as fast as six weeks.
