Loofah sponge, cable wires, and plastic straws were given a new, fashionable life by a group of fashion students.
The recent Slim’s Fashion and Arts School Best of Student Work Exhibit 2019 at SM Megamall’s Mega Fashion Hall, entitled “Alchemy,” showcased the creations of students who combined their trademark creativity with proficient execution skills.
This year’s presentation featured “upcycling” or the idea of taking something with little or no value and transforming it into something beautiful or something more valuable.
There were hand-sewn barongs embellished with X-ray charts, plastic straws, soda can pull tabs, and straw strings; an organza terno adorned with loofah sponge; an outfit made of old neckties and bow ties; and a piña jusi cocktail terno adorned with clothing labels and care tags, among others.
The upcycling theme was also evident in the set–up of brown boxes made stylish with fashion sketches conceptualized and drawn by the students.
This is the fifth year that SM and Slim’s have collaborated on this annual event which is part of the students’ exams. All clothes on the exhibit were designed and constructed by the students themselves within a limited time frame.
