Easy-to-cook meals for cats

(Last part)

Cat owners are always looking for the best food for their furbabies.

But there are  cat owners  who have found some cat food brands cause  urinary tract infection or kidney problems, or do not contain  nutritious ingredients for cats.

“Dry kibble tends to be loaded with carbohydrates and plant based proteins. Worse, it is often contaminated by bacteria, fungal mycotoxins and even vermin and their excretions, “ noted Feline Living  in “9 Homemade Cat Food Recipes That Are Way Healthier Than Kibble.”

“Dry food also does not have a high enough moisture content for cats. Many people remember the mass pet food recalls in 2007 after many unfortunate animals experienced renal failure after eating contaminated food, “ Feline Living added.

Start them young. Give small amounts of home cooked meals as treats to kittens when they are already allowed to eat solid food.

It is thus a good idea  to start cooking your cat’s food.  Either the cooked food can replace dry kinbble or canned food, or can be given as a treat to supplement these manufactured food.

But one must know what should be in the food for your cat’s health and safety

“Cats that eat healthy are healthy and won’t need to see a vet as often. Plus, a healthy cat is a happy cat,” Feline Living said.

Also, offering something new every now and then will make their day exciting.

Save ALL Inc.-Save Animals of Love and Light Save ALL Inc.), a SEC-registered animal welfare group,  gives  rescued cats both manufactured dry and canned (wet)  food and cooked food. We give the dry cat food in the morning as caretakers can not cook very early for so many cats, then we give  canned or wet food  at lunch time so we can put the multivitamins in it. For dinner, we usually give home cooked food. Or we give the new home cooked food on other days to put excitement to their day.

Here are the ingredients  that will make your cat healthy:

Animal Protein

Cats need protein.

“The cat is an obligate carnivore. She needs meat to survive, “ Feline Living stressed.

Be careful with some cat food brand that claims their product is high in protein when the real “protein sources are only soy, nuts, lentils or wheat gluten,”  Feline Living said.

“This will not do. A cat can only digest protein from animal sources. The domestic cat has the shortest digestive tract to body size ratio of any mammal. This makes it very hard for them to digest plant based protein,” Feline Living said.

Animal fats

Cats need easily digestible fats for energy.

Cats specifically need omega-6 fatty acids such as linolic and arachidonic acid. Fish oil, krill oil and flaxseed are all good sources of omega-3 fatty acids but poultry, beef and pork also contain healthy animal protein that your cat needs.

However, “If your cat has pancreatitis, you may want to feed her something lower in fat, “ Feline Living said.

Peach (inside the cage)  and Berry are one-year-old cuties who love home cooked meals and canned food with water. Both are rescued cats who are up for adoption.

Calcium and phosphorus

Calcium and phosphorus are necessary for strong bones and teeth. Calcium also  helps in blood clot and phosphorus boosts the repair of cells.

“Phosphorus will help your cat metabolize protein and calcium helps those lightning quick muscles work. Small fishes like sardines and anchovies are calcium rich because their bones are tiny enough to be edible, “ Feline Living said.

These are available as a vitamin supplement.

Water

Cats’ wild ancestors lived in dry climates. Thus, a modern cat does not drink as much water as needed.

It is thus advised that you give food with moisture or add water  or meat broth (no salt please) to  your cat’s food to keep her hydrated.

Vitamins

It is best to provide food with vitamins your cat needs than to just give a supplement.

“Cats can’t convert beta-carotene from plant sources into vitamin A, so it needs to come from an animal source such as halibut, liver and kidneys. Beef liver is also a good source of vitamin D as are tuna, mackerel and salmon,” Feline Living said.

It added: “To help your cat have a healthy coat, vitamin E can be found in eggs. The B vitamins are essential to a cat’s well being and can be found in liver, brown rice, poultry, fish and red meat.”

Bones

Do not give bones. Remove the bone from fish  to avoid choking. You can grind the bone instead.

“Calcium carbonate not only provides necessary calcium but is a natural preservative. Do keep in mind that your cat can have too much of a good thing where calcium is involved. Don’t overdo it,” Feline Living said.

Organs

Liver and kidneys of chicken, pigs and cows are good for cats.

The liver contains vitamin A while kidneys are full  of vitamin  B vitamins and iron.

You can also give heart , tongue and tripe to cats.

Heart contains vitamin B12, iron and phosphorus IT should not be overcooked.

Beef tongue has B12, iron and zinc but also cholesterol, so give only a little amount.

Below are recipes for home-cooked meals.

Please check with your vet before  giving any of these meals to your cat as some  cats may be prone to allergies or may have certain diseases that require less of the ingredients mentioned.
