Must-have: speaker light bulbs

An LED light bulb with a built-in speaker is something I wish I’d thought of. It’s really a simple yet genius concept. LEDs are the best kind of home lighting today because they’re energy-efficient and they’re not limited to a single color. The ones available in the market can dim and change colors, just like the notification lights on certain phone models.

And by putting in a speaker, well, that’s just a party. Most people go for wireless speakers because we all hate wires, right? But the problem with them is that they run out of juice at some point and we’ll have to plug them in again and again. Speaker light bulbs will never lose power because they’re not battery-operated. You just screw them in and they’re good to go.

So imagine the many ways you can enhance the mood of your living spaces with these little babies – music playing in the background in every room while your choice of lighting hue (bluish for relaxation, rainbow for fun, yellowish white for photo-ops, red for sexy time, etc.) and sequence (pulsing, flashing, fading) creates the perfect atmosphere. And I repeat: No messy wires!

The best part of it all is that everything is controlled via mobile app so you can change it up as you please with swipes and taps.

Playbulb Color, available online right now, allows for changing the color of the light with a single tap. It also has a wake-up and sleep timer that you can program with the right music to wake you up and put you to sleep. The light can be dimmed to serve as a night light, which can also be complemented with the playback of a bedtime audio book.

Meanwhile, LightFreq Square2, currently on crowdfunding, wakes you up in the morning with weather and traffic alerts, and alerts you with notifications when your phone is in the other room. It also functions as an intercom system. There’s also the option to get a supplemental light bulb with no speakers called MUTE, which is synced with the rest of the system. And if you’re going away for a vacation, you can program the whole thing to switch on and off to give the impression that someone’s there, thus adding a layer of security to your home.

Playbulb Color can be purchased through online retailers for $79.99 each. No retail price is available yet for LightFreq Square2. But you be one of the first owners of the product, which ships in October, if you back the campaign over at Indiegogo.
