The City Government of Muntinlupa has donated P5 million or P500,000 each to 10 municipalities in Cagayan, Benguet, and Kalinga that were affected by Typhoon “Ompong.”

On Sept. 15, Ompong (international name: “Mongkhut”) made landfall in Baggao, Cagayan and threatened Northern Luzon leaving at least 81 people dead.

While the Department of National Defense said Baggao suffered the most damage, the number of casualties has climbed mostly due to the corpses recovered from landslides in the Cordillera Administrative Region, including the mining town of Itogon.

Muntinlupa City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Erwin Alfonso and Muntinlupa Social Service Department chief Analyn Mercado handed the donation to local officials and council members of the typhoon-stricken towns.

The 10 municipalities include Baggao, Iguig, Pamplona, Lasam, Claveria, Sta. Praxedes, and Sanchez Mira in Cagayan, Itogon and Kabayan in Benguet, and Pasil in Kalinga.

Leaders from the recipient municipalities expressed their utmost thanks to the City Government for the aid.

Muntinlupa Mayor Jaime Fresnedi said this initiative is the city’s share in helping kababayan who are in need.

“In the spirit of Bayanihan, the local government of Muntinlupa has been and will continue to lend its hand to towns in the country needing assistance,” the local exec added.

Fresnedi hopes the financial assistance will help in the rehabilitation and recovery of the towns.

Muntinlupa also extended humanitarian aid to Marawi City by providing a P5-million scholarship fund for the students in the war-stricken town. The city committed to donate a P5-million scholarship fund to Marawi annually for five years to fill the critical gaps for displaced students and provide for their educational needs.
