Tacurong City—Families have evacuated as overnight heavy downpour triggered flash floods and landslides in at least two villages of Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat on Tuesday and Wednesday.

A total of 70 families living near landslide-prone areas were forced to vacate their homes on Tuesday night amid the heavy rains that started 4 p.m. until 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Knee-deep floods submerged houses in Purok Riverside, Barangay Blingkong starting at 1 a.m. Wednesday after the Blingkong River overflowed, forcing 20 families to move to the village chapel.

Barangay Blingkong chairman Mariano Antonio Jr. said a large portion of the riverside collapsed and carried away some properties and cows, goats and carabaos.

Banana plantations and vegetable gardens were also flooded, with an undetermined worth of agricultural crops destroyed.

In Barangay Tananzang, also in Lutayan, the municipal disaster workers implemented forced evacuation for about 50 families following landslides and soil erosion in their communities.

Alryan Limbo, Lutayan Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (MDRRM) officer, said the local government unit is still studying when the displaced families will be allowed to return home.

“It is still dangerous to let them go back home,” he said.

The local government, through the social welfare and development office, has extended emergency aid to affected families now housed in the village chapel.

Classes were suspended at the Tananzang Elementary School and the adjacent Bangasong Elementary School on Wednesday.
