Solving the EDSA crush

Bea Villoria and Noel Narciso (below) from the architecture program of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) School of Design and Arts (SDA) recently came up with an innovative solution to the years-old mobility problem along EDSA. Under the mentorship of their professors, Architects Ven Quizon and Jimmy Caumeron, they devised the EDSA Prototype for Mobility Project (Shown here), to transform the bustling Edsa-Ayala Station of the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) in the Makati business district to a public space that allows the incoming and outgoing passengers to traverse with ease. Narciso’s design features a diagonal ramp that intersects all slabs and is placed on both sides of the structure connected by bridges crossing above, where walkers can make their way without having to jaywalk. Villoria’s prototype used a rotunda as her concept with well-lit bigger sidewalks at the ground level. Both students ensured that the beauty of the environment and the relaxing hues of greens seamlessly blend within the urban jungle. They included a sky garden at the uppermost level, where passengers can observe the city skyline. “Commuters often stay in the lower level. With the help of the attraction on top, they will have reasons to go up and visit,” Villoria said. “Sunlight naturally enters and it is well-ventilated.  This is contrary to the current state of the LRT and MRT stations, which are rather dim.”  The two innovators also incorporated ramps to accommodate persons with disabilities (PWDs).
