Internet speed in PH improving, says report

Speedtest Global Index Report of Ookla for August 2018 reported that the Philippines’ average download speed for mobile broadband improved 89.1 percent from 7.44 Mbps in July 2016 to 14.07 Mbps in August this year.

The average for fixed broadband, meanwhile, improved 122.12 percent from 7.91 Mbps (July 2016) to 17.57 Mbps (August 2018).

For mobile broadband, the country’s monthly averages grew steadily from 7.44 Mbps (July 2016), to 13.37 Mbps (July 2018) and 14.07 Mbps (August 2018).

For fixed broadband, the country’s monthly averages also continue to trend upward from 7.91 Mbps (July 2016 )to 17.32 Mbps (July 2018) and 17.57 Mbps (August 2018).

The government’s call for a third major telecommunications player by the end of this year is expected to improve internet speed and availability further.

The National Telecommunications Commission published on September 21 Memorandum Circular 09-09-2018 on the rules and regulations on the selection process for a new major player in the telecommunications.  The circular takes effect on November 5, 2018.
