3 provinces commit to help rice farmers

Three top rice producing provinces in the country have taken the challenge of Agriculture Secretary William Dar to engage in the entire rice value chain.

The provincial governments of Isabela, Nueva Ecija and Ilocos Norte rolled similar programs of buying palay directly from farmers, dry and mill and sell it directly in the province and to sister-cities like Makati, Quezon City, Mandaluyong and San Juan.

Nueva Ecija said over the weekend it provided P200 million in fund this year to aggressively buy palay from farmers.

Dar said Ilocos Norte Gov. Michael Marcos Manotoc, during a farmers’ forum at Mariano Marcos State University in Batac, agreed to start the province to directly involve itself in the rice industry by buying palay from farmers, dry and mill it, and sell to consumers.

“We appeal to the other top 27 rice producing provinces to follow suit, help our small rice farmers and their families tide the current dampened prices of palay,” said Dar.
