Turner Broadcasting System Asia Pacific and Nine Media Corp. on Tuesday announced a joint partnership to launch CNN Philippines, an English news channel that will replace 9TV on RPN network starting next year.
The two companies said an important part of the partnership would be a world-class digital component with CNN Philippines TV channel being complemented by CNNPhilippines.com.
“The global news gathering power of CNN combined with the local perspective Nine Media Corp. brings, enables us to provide first-class news and information to millions of Filipinos in a way that we have not been able to previously. I couldn’t be happier to welcome CNN Philippines to the CNN family,” CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker said in a statement.
Turner Broadcasting president Gerard Zeller said the deal was another example of Turner’s commitment to growth in the Asia-Pacific region.
“We are thrilled to partner with Nine Media Corp. as a news organization that shares our vision, mission and values—to serve this hugely important audience,” Zeller said.
Nine Media chairman Antonio Cabangon-Chua said “by integrating local elements and contents in its programming, CNN Philippines brings together world-class local and international content for Filipino audiences.”
Nine Media president Reggie Galura said Filipino viewers would be given a global perspective of key issues “and worldwide trending stories as well as championing Filipino values and culture through locally produced content.”
CNN Philippines will operate from Manila and replace 9TV on the RPN network nationwide. CNN Philippines is the latest addition to a family that includes CNN Turk, CNN IBN, CNN Chile and CNN Indonesia which deliver local relevance and new with high-quality journalism that consumers expect from CNN.
CNN Philippines will be available in 2015 on free-to-air TV in Manila RPN-TV 9, Cebu RPN-TV9, Davao, RPN-TV9 , Zamboanga RPN-TV5, Baguio RPN-TV12 and Bacolod RPN-TV8 and also on cable TV through Sky Channel 14 (Metro Manila), Sky Cable Channel 6, Destiny Cable Channel 14, Cablelink Channel 14 and Cignal Channel 10.
Turner Broadcasting operates versions of core TBS brands such as CNN, TNT, Cartoon Network and Turner Classic Movies as well as other region-specific networks. It operates in more than 160 channels.
